Subdomains for site collections

In order to be able to use subdomains for different sitecollections, we have to use hostheaders. Sharad Kumar provides a good example:

$w = Get-SPWebApplication http://sitename
New-SPSite http://www.contoso.com
    -OwnerAlias "DOMAIN\jdoe" -HostHeaderWebApplication $w
    -Name "Contoso" -Template "STS#0"

If we want to create, say http://rockets.contoso.com, we can run:

New-SPSite http://rockets.contoso.com
    -OwnerAlias "DOMAIN\jdoe" -HostHeaderWebApplication "http://sitename"
-Name "Rockets" -Template "STS#0" -Language 1053

But beware: afterwards you can’t create a spweb http://contoso.com/rockets…

A host-based (or host-named) site collection can be a subdomain or a different domain or (in development environment) a fictive domain. However you have set up the (sub)domain in DNS. In a development environment you can kick start with editing hosts.

Then you have to solve the login bug. Open regedit.exe (Start regedit.exe, or C:\Windows\regedit.exe). Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\MSV1_0
Add a new multi string entry BackConnectionHostNames and add your new host-based site collection host.

Then restart iisadmin

restart-service iisadmin
